CUT. SMOKE. WRAP. EAT. REPEAT.

Primarily, Legendary Meats is a Custom Cutting Shop, secondarily a wholesale meat shop. Local farmers as far away as Nakusp to Rossland to Harrop-Proctor bring their lovingly raised livestock to be butchered (cut into edible parts). Secondarily, Legendary Meats will service hunters, this is time and space permitting.

Wholesale meats come in the form of custom freezer packs (we call these Custom Critter Crates), made from various cuts and species of meats, to in house made sausages and smoked meats.

“ We see the social and economic consequences of industrial agriculture in the demise of independent family farms and the social and economic decay of rural communities as the farms have grown larger in size, fewer in number, and increasingly corporate-controlled. In addition, the most basic of human rights of self-determination and self-defense are systematically denied to rural residents who are forced to live with the risks to public health increasingly linked to large-scale ‘factory farms’…The irresponsible use of agricultural chemicals, growth hormones, antibiotics, and a multitude of additives in industrial foods add to a growing list of diet-related illnesses. We can no longer afford the high costs of cheap food. “ – John Ikerd

A LEGEND CONTINUES…

Established officially in 2000 as Legendary Meats Ltd from its original beginnings as Anderson’s Custom Cut Shop, in the same location for over 30 years. Much has changed during the course of that time in the way of supply and demand, regulations, and general consumer knowledge – or lack-there-of.

Our mandate is to serve our community as a part of our community; we primarily service farmers, about 95%, and secondarily hunters about 5% (space and time permitting). As rules permitted many years ago, on-farm harvesting was a keystone component to the Slocan Valley, and much further beyond. Now it seems as though that it’s harder than ever to source non-creepy food: sans GMO, pesticide-ready, petroleum based, nutrient-less, damage-rich, ecologically degrading food. While sourcing local (within a 100 Km) is rather difficult  to obtain (insert many reasons here, a discussion for later), we strive to source products that are in the greater zone of “local” (600 Km away), which are all British Columbia based.

BEN THE BUTCHER

Ben Carson has been working in the meat industry since 2001, gaining an assortment of job titles along the way. His journey began in his home provence of Ontario, starting as a sausage maker, junior meat cutter, meat cutter, butcher, meat manager, a couple fancy office titles, to business partner. As an ex-vegetarian, animal husbandry (and quality of livestock life) has always been the main focus of his attention.  Big business left him disheartened and confused, having learnt more about large agribusiness, and all the perils attached. Since taking over Legendary Meats, Ben now finds that he is in a place to facilitate the much needed change in the meat industry.

VICTORIA THE BOSS

Alberta born, Victoria Carson has completed her BSc in Agroecology, Soil Science (2012) and her certification as a Permaculture Designer (2010). A passion for food has long been budding; with her own decade-long personal shift of better eating choices and a more conscious living, she strives to share these same code-of-ethics and morals with her customers. Diving far into the deep end of life, September of 2013 Victoria found herself as business partners, with her new husband, of a 30-year well established custom meat cutting business. With no prior experience and fueled mostly by her passion for food sovereignty, Victoria has taken on the many tasks as the organizer.

WE ARE FOODIES TOO

Basically we love food and a challenge. We love to teach and educate folks as they vote with their forks and steer the food culture one way or the other. It’s time for a cultural shift in eating habits, as you’ll come to learn once you meet us.

If you haven’t already, and you are a foodie (those who are curious, or conscious, or totally involved eaters), you are more than likely to catch us outside the shop at certain food events. Places such as Farm Food Fork representing the processing community, the eating / consuming community, and the growers community. Or how about in our knowledge sharing workshops we have offered since 2013, such as Pig in a Day. And sometimes quick demonstrations can be seen at places such as Chicken Day.
